In a landmark move last year, Keystone Environmental proudly announced its participation in the Government of Canada’s Net-Zero Challenge. This initiative encourages businesses to develop and implement realistic and effective strategies to transition their facilities and operations to net-zero emission by 2050. As we progress on this important journey, we want to share our advancements and reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable future.

Keystone Environmental has taken a significant step towards sustainability. This crucial initiative is urging businesses to develop actionable plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. This commitment is not just a corporate responsibility; it’s a promise to our planet and future generations.

Keystone Environmental is committing to Net-Zero by 2050 in its Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

We recognize our responsibility spans three distinct categories:

Scope 1: Direct Emissions

These are direct greenhouse gas emissions that result from sources that are owned or controlled by the reporting entity. These emissions are within the direct operational control of the organization such as boilers, furnaces, and company vehicles. Keystone Environmental only owns one company vehicle, the emissions from this vehicle were reported as the only direct emissions.

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions – Energy Indirect

These emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the generation of purchased or acquired electricity, heat, or steam consumed by the reporting company. These emissions occur off-site but are associated with the organization’s activities. Keystone Environmental uses electricity for its office operations and natural gas for hot water, which are the sources for the indirect emissions in Scope 2.

Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions

These emissions are a broader category of indirect emissions that result from sources not owned or controlled by the reporting entity but are related to the organization’s activities. These emissions are not mandatory under the GHG Protocol or the Net-Zero Challenge Technical Guide. The following activities are considered in the GHG inventory:

  • Business travel,
  • Project associated travel in rental vehicles,
  • Employee commuting,
  • Production or manufacture of paper used by the company,
  • Outsourcing of shipping and courier services, and
  • Solid waste.

By committing to net-zero across all three scopes, we’re not just looking at our immediate impact but taking responsibility for our entire environmental footprint. The next phase of our journey involves working closely with Keystone Environmental’s Sustainability Committee. Together, we will adopt best practices, leverage innovative technologies, and find creative solutions to reduce emissions throughout our operations and beyond. This collaborative effort for net-zero emissions will also involve engaging our partners and third parties to ensure they are aligned with our sustainability goals.
